An ‘I’ beam would the simplest form of support. A rectangular tube can also fair well, too.
The vertical portion of the ‘I’ beam is what holding the load and those two horizontal portions helps the vertical portion from twisting.
If the horizontal portions were missing while holding a load, it can still support, but if any slight side or lateral load applied on the vertical part it will fail immediately like a steel measuring tape.
